It cannot shatter hope. Photos by Mark Reis.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As he receives an immunotherapy drug that is working to halt the cancer inside of him, Oliver and his wife, Marlene, tell the story of how they met.<\/p>\n<h3>Sparks flew from the start<\/h3>\n<p>Oliver, an over-the-road truck driver, stopped by a clinic where Marlene works, so he could complete a random drug screen for his employer. They had electricity from the start. And, after completing the screen, Oliver, popped the question: \u201cCan I have your phone number?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Marlene gave him her number, but when he called a few days later and asked her to go out on a date, she declined. A few weeks later, while in the process of moving from one apartment to another, she called him to ask if he could give her a hand. He told her he happened to be out running around, and he\u2019d come to help.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was there in five minutes,\u2019\u2019 Marlene said, her eyes teasing him for wasting no time getting there.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver helped her move some things, then he gave her a few things that he wasn\u2019t using. He helped her set up her home, right down to hanging pictures on the walls. I treat her like a queen because she deserves that. She really does,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cI love my wife.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<h3>An unexpected turn<\/h3>\n<p>Little did they know that only a few months after their wedding, Oliver, a former smoker, would begin to experience a pain that couldn\u2019t be knocked down with eight, 600mg of ibuprofen a day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought I had a pinched nerve in my right shoulder,\u2019\u2019 he said. By December 2016, the pain got so bad that Oliver couldn\u2019t sleep. He was losing weight, his right eye sagged and he had no appetite. His orthopedic doctor, whom he was seeing for a presumed shoulder injury, sent him back to a primary care doctor for a full workup with blood draws and x-rays.<\/p>\n<p>In early February, Marlene took Oliver to the Emergency Department at UCHealth Memorial Hospital because she knew something was wrong. His leg was dragging when he walked. A team of doctors surrounded Oliver. Imaging showed Oliver had a large tumor on his lung, which stretched form his sternum to near his armpit, measuring nearly the size of a Frisbee. The mass, a Pancoast tumor, was so large, it pressed against his spine.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19414\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19414\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-19414\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee.webp\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee.webp 1200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08133629\/08_25_2018-UCHEALTH-HARVEY-0172.jpgeee-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19414\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">UCHealth patient Oliver Harvey walks with his wife, Marlene, as well as brother, Albert, and Albert&#8217;s wife, Patricia, at Oliver&#8217;s Colorado Springs home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/thomas-ridder-neurological-surgery\/\">Dr. Thomas Ridder<\/a>, a neurosurgeon at UCHealth Memorial Hospital, explained to Marlene that Oliver needed emergency surgery to remove as much of the tumor as possible to relieve pressure on his spine.<\/p>\n<p>Marlene said she told Dr. Ridder: \u201cWhatever we have to do to make sure that he stays on this earth, that\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do.\u2019\u2019.<\/p>\n<h3>The surgery<\/h3>\n<p>Two days later, on Monday morning, a team that included Dr. Ridder and Dr. Matthew Blum, a thoracic surgeon, began a surgery that would last all day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOliver had a very large lung mass that extended into his spinal column causing spinal cord compression,\u2019\u2019 said Dr. Ridder said. \u201cWithout surgery, he probably would have progress to complete paralysis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis surgery was very difficult and was combined with Dr. Blum to resect as much of the tumor as possible,\u2019\u2019 Ridder said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ridder explained that surgery involved removing Oliver\u2019s vertebra and replacing it with titanium cage and screws and two titanium rods to stabilize his spine.<\/p>\n<p>Because of the tumor\u2019s location on the lung and spine, surgeons could not remove it all without risking damage to both.\u00a0 Oliver went to the Intensive Care Unit and then to Memorial\u2019s inpatient rehabilitation unit, located at Memorial Hospital Central on the 7<sup>th<\/sup> floor. Further imaging showed the cancer had moved into Oliver\u2019s abdomen and brain.<\/p>\n<h3>Determination<\/h3>\n<p>\u201cI never claim none of it,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cAnd I won\u2019t. He knew then, only a few days from surgery, what would be his ultimate goal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to do that,\u2019\u2019 he told Marlene. \u201cI\u2019m going to walk.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>After a week of therapy, Oliver was transferred to another unit in the hospital where cancer patients are cared for. He continued chemotherapy and radiation, and after 35 days in the hospital, Oliver had enough strength to get himself from the bed and into a wheelchair and he went home. Marlene took time off work so she could care for him.<\/p>\n<h3>Keeping the faith<\/h3>\n<p>Oliver kept his mind and his prayers on his goal, and delighted in the occasional visit from his grandson, Benson, who wanted Oliver to play.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPapa, get up,\u2019\u2019 Benson would say. \u201cGet up and play.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19417\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19417\" style=\"width: 188px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19417\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08134115\/thomasRidder.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Dr. Thomas Ridder\" width=\"188\" height=\"243\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08134115\/thomasRidder.webp 188w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08134115\/thomasRidder-116x150.webp 116w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19417\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Thomas Ridder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Oliver was too weak to stand. He had whittled from 203 pounds to 160 pounds, and his mind was foggy from chemotherapy and radiation. It took everything he had to transfer from his bed to his wheelchair, but he did it.<\/p>\n<p>In time, Oliver grew stronger and Marlene went back to work. Every morning, she makes his breakfast and lunch so he can heat it up in the microwave and get the nourishment that he needs.<\/p>\n<p>He listened through headphones to Gospel music, the songs that remind him of his years growing up in Mississippi, to nourish his soul.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI go into my own world, I do,\u2019\u2019 he said of the music, noting that his favorite Gospel song, appropriately, is:<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>I just can\u2019t give up now<\/em>.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p><em>I just can&#8217;t give up now<br \/>\nI&#8217;ve come too far from where<br \/>\nI started from<br \/>\nNobody told me<br \/>\nThe road would be easy<br \/>\nAnd I don&#8217;t believe<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>He&#8217;s brought me this far<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>To leave me<\/em><\/p>\n<p>As the months passed, Oliver fought. (Courtesy of Oliver\u2019s wife, Marlene.)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cEverything started changing,\u2019\u2019 he said, \u201cMy immune system started kicking in.\u2019\u2019 Feeling more like himself, Oliver had more energy to tease Benson, the bundle of energy who is fond of using Oliver\u2019s couch as a trampoline.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI tell him, \u2018You don\u2019t do that at Grandma and Grandpa\u2019s house. You don\u2019t jump on the furniture,\u2019 \u2019\u2019 Oliver said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to teach him how to keep and appreciate. Every toy he\u2019s got, he done broke. He takes all the wheels off of everything, and you know what I told him, I said, \u2018Grandpa\u2019s going to go and buy you all broken toys and then you can take the wheels off.\u2019 \u201cI think he\u2019s going to be an engineer.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Like any parent or grandparent, Oliver is curious to see how Benson\u2019s story plays out. What will bring him joy? With whom will he fall in love? Where will life take him?<\/p>\n<p>The monthly infusion treatments of Keytruda have been effective, and there are no signs of cancer in Oliver\u2019s head or abdomen. In the quiet of the afternoons, he tells himself that no matter what happens he will be OK.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver grew stronger every day, building up physical stamina to walk with a walker and enough strength to wean himself from oxygen.<\/p>\n<p>Visits from Benson also helped, immensely.<\/p>\n<p>Oliver recalled a time in late July when Benson asked: \u201cPapa, you like pickles?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, Papa likes pickles,\u2019\u2019 he told him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPapa, get up. Papa, get up. Can you get me a pickle?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me show you something, baby, \u2019\u2019 Oliver told told Benson. \u201c \u2018Watch.\u2019 \u2018\u2019<\/p>\n<p>He got up, showed Benson how he could walk without his walker, went to the fridge and got Benson a pickle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI got rid of the hospital bed. I got rid of the oxygen, and I got rid of the wheelchair. I can\u2019t claim none of this. You cannot claim it \u2013 it is not mine,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<h3>Bringing light to the cancer clinic<\/h3>\n<p>Dr. Njiaju, his oncologist, said Oliver\u2019s \u201cgreat spirit, enthusiasm and optimism,\u2019\u2019 have been a joy to see, and have helped him face such a serious illness.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_19419\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19419\" style=\"width: 191px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-19419\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08135206\/Njiaju.webp\" alt=\"A photo of Dr. Uchenna Njiaju\" width=\"191\" height=\"244\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08135206\/Njiaju.webp 191w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/11\/08135206\/Njiaju-117x150.webp 117w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-19419\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Uchenna Njiaju<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cA Pancoast tumor is near the top of the lung, and it is near the nerves that come out of the spine so it can cause a lot of issues related to those nerves,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Njiaju said. \u201cSometimes you can have even a change of sweating over the face, sometimes you can have weakness or nerve pains around the arm, sometimes you can have the eyelid drooping so things like that are related to the nerves that the tumor can press on, so that is what is unique about a Pancoast tumor.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Oliver\u2019s larger-than-life personality, is a delight in the clinic, Dr. Njiaju said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost of the time we will clap when he walks out,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cHe will tell me, \u2018You know, I am not in the wheelchair anymore.\u2019 And, I say, \u2018I see it.\u2019 I line everybody up, and we clap for him because it is huge progress from being almost paralyzed to walking with a cane. He has made huge progress. \u2018\u2019<\/p>\n<p>During a recent visit, Oliver glanced at a photo of himself that was taken more than a year ago, when he was beginning the fight for his life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI look at myself now,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cAnd I\u2019ve come a long way from there. Everything has been in stages, from the hospital bed to the wheelchair, from the wheelchair to the walker, from the walker to the cane. Everything is step by step and that\u2019s how I planned it. My body is here, but my mind is down the street. You know what I\u2019m telling you? And I\u2019m going to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Ridder said Oliver remains one of his heroes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis love for Marlene, and his ambition and motivation to walk from the beginning of his diagnosis, have been unrelenting,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Ridder said.<\/p>\n<p>A recent scan of Oliver\u2019s body showed no signs of cancer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re working on me. They\u2019re trying to kill that thing. And I appreciate what they have done to it. I\u2019m good with me, I\u2019m good with my higher power, I\u2019m good with my wife and my kids. I\u2019m good, and they\u2019re going to be good,\u2019\u2019 he said.<\/p>\n<p>He will continue to fight cancer, but like the poem says, Oliver knows what it cannot do. It cannot cripple love. It cannot shatter hope.
