Taking a deep breath is not only good for your respiratory system, it helps with relaxation.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Your respiratory system works hard, logging 20,000 breaths daily. But sometimes, issues arise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRespiratory muscles are working every minute of the day, every day of our lives,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/james-d-hoyt-md-internal-medicine-pulmonary-disease-and-critical-care-medicine\/\">Dr. James\u00a0Hoyt<\/a>, a pulmonologist with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-pulmonology-fort-collins\/\">UCHealth Pulmonology Clinic \u2013 Harmony Campus in Fort Collins<\/a>, who also sees patients at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-pulmonology-steamboat-springs\/\">UCHealth Pulmonology Clinic in Steamboat Springs<\/a>. \u201cOur respiratory muscles don\u2019t have the luxury of being out of shape.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below, Hoyt gives insight to breathing basics, as well as common issues and how to deal with them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How breathing works<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To better understand your respiratory system, first picture a tree.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_18540\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18540\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-18540\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/09\/19095252\/JamesHoyt.pngeee.webp\" alt=\"Dr. James Hoyt, a pulmonologist at UCHealth Pulmonology Clinic - Harmony Campus in Fort Collins.\" width=\"200\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/09\/19095252\/JamesHoyt.pngeee.webp 200w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2018\/09\/19095252\/JamesHoyt.pngeee-124x150.webp 124w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-18540\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. James Hoyt, a pulmonologist at UCHealth Pulmonology Clinic &#8211; Harmony Campus in Fort Collins.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe trachea, or windpipe, is like the trunk of the tree,\u201d Hoyt said. \u201cFrom there, the airways divide and divide, like branches of a tree. At the end of a tree\u2019s branches are leaves; similarly, the ends of the bronchioles have alveoli also known as air sacs, where gas exchange takes place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the air sacs, freshly inhaled oxygen is passed to the blood, which is then pumped through the body; the air sacs also absorb carbon dioxide, which is then removed from the body through exhalation.<\/p>\n<p>The diaphragm, a thin muscle that separates the chest and abdominal cavities, tightens and pulls down as you breathe in, opening the chest cavity and allowing the lungs to expand. To breathe out, your diaphragm relaxes and moves upward, pushing air out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Take a deep breath<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Though it may feel unnatural to breathe deeply, the practice comes with various benefits. Deep breaths are more efficient: they allow your body to fully exchange incoming oxygen with outgoing carbon dioxide. They have also been shown to slow the heartbeat, lower or stabilize blood pressure and lower stress.<\/p>\n<p>To experience deep breathing, find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Breathe slowly and deeply through your nose, causing your stomach to rise and expand. Exhale fully.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBreathing deep for a minute isn\u2019t going to improve your lung capacity,\u201d Hoyt said. \u201cBut deep breathing is a good way to reduce stress and relax.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Common breathing issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>One common issue that affects the respiratory system is asthma, which causes the airways to narrow and produce extra mucus, making it difficult to move air through the lungs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith asthma, it\u2019s harder for the air in your lungs to get out,\u201d Hoyt said. \u201cIf you start breathing quickly, you\u2019ll stack more air in the lungs. Then you can\u2019t get a big breath in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>First-line treatment is an inhaled steroid, which reduces bronchial inflammation. Next, a long-acting bronchodilator can help by opening up the bronchial tubes.<\/p>\n<p>Slow, deep breathing using a nebulizer, a device that produces a fine spray of medication that is inhaled, helps in two ways: the medication reduces inflammation, while the deep breathing removes excess air. \u201cThe medication helps, but breathing slow and deep is just as important,\u201d Hoyt said.<\/p>\n<p>With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/copd-chronic-obstructive-pulmonary-disease\/\">COPD<\/a>, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, patients typically have two issues: chronic bronchitis, which inflames airways and results in wheezing, excessive coughing and phlegm production; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/diseases-conditions\/emphysema\/\">emphysema<\/a>, in which the \u2018leaves\u2019 or alveoli of the lungs have been damaged, making it difficult to pass sufficient oxygen to the body.<\/p>\n<p>Bronchodilators, inhaled steroids and other medications are used in treatment. Oxygen therapy may be necessary. About 95 percent of cases of COPD are attributed to smoking.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, in pulmonary fibrosis, the alveoli become scarred. In most cases, doctors don\u2019t know what causes the scarring. \u201cTreatments have been disappointing, as there is nothing that reverses fibrosis,\u201d Hoyt said. \u201cBut a few newer medications may slow the progression of scarring.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To best care for your lungs, avoid smoking, embrace a healthy lifestyle and treat conditions that arise.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWork with your doctor to address any concerns you have about breathing,\u201d Hoyt said. \u201cAfter all, breathing is critical to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>This article first appeared in the Steamboat Pilot &amp; Today on Aug. 27, 2018.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Your respiratory system works hard, logging 20,000 breaths daily.
