Two counties, including Crowley, don\u2019t have a single doctor, according to the Post.<\/p>\n<p>In Lamar, the town is blessed with many good providers and specialists from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-memorial-hospital-central\/\">UCHealth Memorial Hospital<\/a> in Colorado Springs. Each month, specialists set up in the Outpatient Specialty Clinic at the <a href=\"https:\/\/prowersmedical.com\/services\/specialty-clinic\/\">Prowers Medical Center<\/a> to see patients with a variety of illnesses and medical conditions.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13588\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13588\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13588 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26032533\/Dr.-MichelleDeWing.webp\" alt=\"This is a photo of Dr. Michelle DeWing, who provides rural medicine in Colorado.\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13588\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Michelle DeWing<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After she was diagnosed with breast cancer, Bailey, 70, began receiving care from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/michelle-d-dewing-md\/\">Dr. Michelle DeWing<\/a>, a UCHealth breast surgeon and one of several doctors who travel to the town of 7,800 people to provide expert breast cancer, oncology, cardiology and radiology care.<\/p>\n<p>Bailey has recently seen DeWing and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/robert-hoyer-md-hematology-and-oncology\/\">Dr. Robert Hoyer<\/a>, an oncologist, to help her battle what has been diagnosed as a fast-moving, but curable cancer in her breast. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/provider\/uchenna-o-njiaju-md-hematology-and-oncology\/\">Dr. Uchenna Njiaju<\/a>, a medical oncologist and hematologist, sees patients in Woodland Park; and Dr. Vishal Rana, also a hematologist and oncologist, see patients in Hugo, Colorado, a small community southwest of Limon, Colorado. An outreach clinic in Burlington is scheduled to open soon. We can provide pre-ops, post-ops and follow-up appointments for breast patients,\u2019\u2019 DeWing said. \u201cPeople work very hard here, and they\u2019re very grateful to have the resources. It provides a lot of different options for patients.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13596\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13596\" style=\"width: 163px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-13596\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26033646\/margaret-loewen-11.webp\" alt=\"This is a photo of Margaret Loewen, who provides rural medicine in Colorado.\" width=\"163\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26033646\/margaret-loewen-11.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26033646\/margaret-loewen-11-225x300.webp 225w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26033646\/margaret-loewen-11-113x150.webp 113w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/12\/26033646\/margaret-loewen-11-200x267.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 163px) 100vw, 163px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13596\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Margaret Loewen<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/prowersmedical.com\/services\/specialty-clinic\/\">Dr. Margaret Loewen<\/a>, the town\u2019s only emergency room doctors who also has a primary care practice, often refers patients to specialists and two years ago, when Dr. Loewen was diagnosed with breast cancer herself, she turned to Dr. DeWing for help.<\/p>\n<h2>Continuum of care<\/h2>\n<p>When she went to Memorial Hospital in Colorado Springs for a procedure, the radiologist who had treated her in Lamar also treated her in Colorado Springs, providing \u201cseamless continuity of care,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Loewen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe specialty clinic supplements what we are able to do,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Loewen said. \u201cWe love them here.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The Prowers Medical Center is a medical hub in a five-county area in the Arkansas Valley, and it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cms.gov\/Medicare\/Provider-Enrollment-and-Certification\/CertificationandComplianc\/CAHs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Top 100 Critical Access Hospital<\/a>, a designation given to rural hospitals by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services to reduce the financial vulnerability of rural hospitals and improve access to health care by keeping medical care in rural communities.<\/p>\n<p>In Lamar, a breast cancer patient can have a mammogram at the hospital, have the image read by a breast-certified radiologist and receive care from the specialist.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think women understand what a horrible disease breast cancer is,\u2019\u2019 Dr. Loewen said. \u201cI hear a lot of people say that they\u2019ll \u2018let nature take its course,\u2019 but nature is not so kind and it is a horrible disease and if not treated, will end in death.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Hoyer said he enjoys practicing in Lamar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe clinic we\u2019ve created in Lamar is identical to the clinic here. Patients get the same treatment. Since a round-trip would take five to six hours, we\u2019re trying to make access to rural medicine in Colorado easier for patients and families,\u2019\u2019 Hoyer said.<\/p>\n<p>In recent months, Prowers Medical Center, which is accredited by DNV GL for meeting or exceeding safety standards, has made numerous medical advances. The medical center has new operating rooms, an infusion therapy room and offers more than a dozen specialty clinics in Lamar.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really commend the Prowers Medical Center for doing oncology infusion \u2013 it\u2019s a huge benefit for patients,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cThey have put the patients first \u2013 that\u2019s what I have observed there. It\u2019s been really fun and it\u2019s been great getting to know the patients and their families.
