And they need it now. Your regular physician is booked three weeks out. What\u2019s a parent to do?<\/p>\n<p>Look to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/urgent-care\/\">Urgent Care<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Seriously? For a quick physical?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/urgent-care\/\">Urgent Care centers<\/a> are prepared to do that,\u201d says Jeremy Darter, Outreach Coordinator\u00a0for<\/p>\n<p>UCHealth\u00a0Urgent Care &amp; Occupational Medicine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re located all around the city now, so we\u2019ll have a facility nearby to serve most families\u2019 needs,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>There are five Urgent Care centers scattered geographically around the Pikes Peak region. One is at Powers at Barnes, another at Voyageur and North Gate, and one is on West Garden of the Gods Road.\u00a0 A fourth is at Circle near Janitell and a new one just opened at the Falcon Medical Center.<\/p>\n<p>They are convenient because they also are open evenings and weekends, which helps working parents. And no appointment is necessary. To prevent wait times, parents can get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/urgent-care\/\">in queue online\u00a0in advance<\/a> and be \u201cin line\u201d when they walk in the door, instead of joining an existing one.<\/p>\n<p>The new program serves a community need and the cost is just $30, Darter added. Because many insurance policies don\u2019t cover these physicals, this program makes them affordable.<\/p>\n<p>Exams generally take only about 20 minutes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very quick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>It typically includes a child\u2019s medical history and a physical exam, i.e. blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height weight, medications, allergies, heart and lung sounds, reflexes, vision and an overall physical check. Then the patient is referred to their pediatrician or family physician for follow-up.<\/p>\n<p>A summary of the visit is sent to the child\u2019s regular physician.<\/p>\n<p>Every minor (under age 18) must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and parents are reminded that if the child wears glasses or contacts, they should be brought to the examination. And don\u2019t forget the forms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese exams make sure a child is healthy and ready to participate in any sports or activity,\u201d Darter said. \u00a0\u201cAnd it provides a good chance to talk to parents about their child\u2019s health needs\u201d while engaging in strenuous activity.<\/p>\n<p>They even give parents information on how to tell if their child has had a concussion and how to identify\u00a0 other health issues that can come up,\u201d such as dehydration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember when I played high school football in the 1990s, our coach withheld water from us,\u201d Darter said. \u201cThat\u2019s just crazy!\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\">Walk-ins are welcome or you can reserve your spot online by visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/services\/urgent-care\/\">uchealth.org\/urgent-care<\/a> and selecting your desired clinic location.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 You signed up your child for summer camp or sports, and now you discover that they need a physical before they can participate.
