Lewis-McTague enjoys skin-to-skin contact with the twins, born April 26.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Something amazing happens when Nicolle Lewis-McTague holds her twin angels \u2013 Parker and Paisley \u2013 close to her, skin-to-skin.<\/p>\n<p>The babies\u2019 hearts start to beat in unison, and the breaths they take are synchronized. Wearing only diapers, they lie in an upright position against their mother\u2019s bare chest. They\u2019re tucked under a large T-shirt that Nicolle wears.<\/p>\n<p>Like kangaroos, they are snuggled in, peaceful and secure. While these moments are cherished for Nicolle, she also has peace of mind knowing that skin-to-skin contact helps babies grow stronger and healthier.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey love it,\u2019\u2019 Nicolle said. \u201cThis helps them with everything they need.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Amanda Lupton, a registered nurse in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uchealth.org\/locations\/uchealth-neonatal-intensive-care-nicu-memorial-hospital-central\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UCHealth Memorial Hospital\u2019s NICU<\/a>, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4235060\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">evidence shows<\/a> that babies who experience skin-to-skin contact with their parents receive multiple health benefits.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSkin-to-skin contact helps babies by stabilize vital signs, regulate body temperature, increase bonding and improves a mother\u2019s milk supply,\u2019\u2019 Lupton said.<\/p>\n<p>Born April 26, Parker weighed 5 pounds, 6 ounces at birth; his sister, Paisley, weighed 4 pounds, 4 ounces. In the NICU, the goal was to reach 25,000 minutes of skin-to-skin contact over a two-week period as part of Kangaroo Days, an event held annually to raise awareness of the benefits of skin-to-skin contact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe real beneficiaries of this are the babies and the parents,\u2019\u2019 Lupton said. \u201cOur parents have had a really positive response to this.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Some of the health benefits for infants include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Improved heart rate, respiratory rate and oxygenation<\/li>\n<li>Optimal growth and development<\/li>\n<li>Regulation of temperature<\/li>\n<li>Transfer of heat from the parent<\/li>\n<li>Improved sleep-wake state<\/li>\n<li>Improved infant immunity<\/li>\n<li>Improved gastrointestinal function<\/li>\n<li>Earlier and more successful feeding<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Nurses in the NICU also encourage parents whose children cannot yet be held to do \u201chand containment\u2019\u2019 by placing their hand on the top of the baby\u2019s head, and on the bottom of their feet.<\/p>\n<p>Since nurses in the NICU are required to wear gloves when caring for the children, skin-to-skin contact and hand containment offer babies the sense of human touch.<\/p>\n<p>Lupton said that skin-to-skin contact is something that parents should do with their children up until the age of 1.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBabies hear their parents\u2019 voices, they know their smell and they can get very good, deep sleep,\u2019\u2019 Lupton said. \u201cEverybody is helped by this \u2013 it\u2019s so good for the baby to be on your skin.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_10445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10445\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-10445 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018.webp\" alt=\"This photo shows a personalized book that Child Life specialists at UCHealth Memorial Hospital created to help siblings understand what happens in a NICU.\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018.webp 1500w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018-300x200.webp 300w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018-1024x683.webp 1024w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018-768x512.webp 768w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018-150x100.webp 150w, https:\/\/uchealth-wp-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2017\/05\/15035603\/skin-to-skin-018-200x133.webp 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-10445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Child Life specialists at UCHealth Memorial Hospital created a personalized book to help siblings understand what happens in a NICU.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Nicolle said that while spending several weeks in the NICU, the nurses and techs at Memorial \u201cbecome your second family.\u2019\u2019 She said the clinical staff has been terrific about educating parents about the benefits of skin-to-skin contact.<\/p>\n<p>Parker and Paisley have gained weight since they were born, and they\u2019re doing well. Though they are only a few weeks old, they seem to have a language between them \u2013 a togetherness.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen she stirs, he will stir. And when she fusses, he\u2019ll fuss too,\u2019\u2019 Nicolle said.<\/p>\n<p>As they lie on their mother\u2019s chest, there\u2019s no stirring or fussing.
