But if you ask anyone who has met him, they\u2019ll tell you it\u2019s so much more than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s possibly the most positive person I know, and he\u2019s so loyal to this department,\u201d said Jenny Janiec, a registered nurse in Poudre Valley Hospital\u2019s emergency room. \u201cHe has true empathy \u2014 as much for us as for the patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob has accumulated 6,000 volunteer hours at PVH, and all but two of his 11 years volunteering have been spent in the PVH ER. Photo by Kelly Tracer, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Volunteering is a journey of the heart, she explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just about placing volunteers,\u201d Fisher continued. \u201cIt\u2019s about speaking to what they love to do which is a powerful engagement measure for the volunteer.\u00a0That engagement shines when they volunteer which is why everyone just loves Bob.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob\u2019s late wife, Barbara,\u00a0introduced him to volunteering. She had been volunteering at PVH for several years when she suggested that he might enjoy it too. And he did.<\/p>\n<p>The two worked together at the ambassador\u2019s desk \u2014 Barbara first training Bob \u2014 at PVH\u2019s front entrance. And Bob, in his black pants, white T-shirt, and purple volunteer shirt, would deliver flowers to people\u2019s rooms and help visitors find their loved ones\u2019 rooms.<\/p>\n<p>After dropping off flowers one day, a patient \u2014 Bob remembers her as cheerful and very nice \u2014 turned to Bob and said, \u201cCan I have communion now?\u201d The look on his face gave her the answer, and they laughed together at her mistaking him for a priest. Photo by Kelly Tracer, UCHealth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRobert Ingersoll stated, \u2018We rise by lifting others,\u2019\u201d Fisher said. \u201cBob lifts us all by his compassion, caring, loving spirit, but most of all, his eternal dedication to UCHealth and Poudre Valley Hospital.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bob comes to the ER each Christmas. It\u2019s not his shift, but he knows that his ER team has a long day ahead of them, so he brings his homemade \u201cSpecial K\u201d bars to revive them.<\/p>\n<p>As a volunteer, he trains other ER volunteers, including up to 15 students a semester. For Bob, it\u2019s exciting to see the young students anxious to learn. This UCHealth \u0093Moment to Shine\u0094 event was a thank you to Bob for his almost 11 years as a volunteer in UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital\u0092s emergency room. Moments to Shine is made possible through community partnerships, such as the one with the Colorado Rockies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For Fisher, Bob\u2019s understanding and empathy with patients and families, which shines through in training, is extremely valuable to UCHealth and its new volunteers.<\/p>\n<p>When the new PVH ER opened Feb. 26 as part of the hospital\u2019s expansion, Bob came in at 5 a.m. to help open the doors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe staff was ecstatic that he was going to be able to help them that day,\u201d Fisher said. \u201cBob is a valued member of the emergency room team, and they knew they needed him there as part of this historic day. I think that speaks highly of the respect and admiration that we all have for Bob Allen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And Bob feels it too; it\u2019s why he\u2019s stayed so long as an ER volunteer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember, even my first day (in the ER), how they welcomed me like they had always known me, and everyone is always saying, \u2018thank you,\u2019\u201d he said. \u201cThere are different strokes for different folks, and for me, this fits.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Longtime hospital volunteer Bob Allen might believe that people remember him because of his wardrobe or simple name.
