An artist, pure and simple
Dr. Fred Deleyiannis
Dr. Fred Deleyiannis is an artist, pure and simple, though is canvas is not paper or linen, but human beings.
A UCHealth plastic surgeon, Deleyiannis toils hours in operating rooms to restore vital function for people whose bodies have been ravaged by trauma or cancer.
He also makes it his mission to travel each year to Guatemala City to help children who have facial deformities – specifically deformities of the ears.
Deleyiannis fabricates an ear by taking bone from a number of ribs and carving them into the shape of an ear. He covers it with skin. During subsequent surgery, he adds more detail and projection to the ear.
Deleyiannis has traveled to Guatemala City every year for the last 15 years to rebuild the ears of children.
“Seeing the children from last year coming back for the second stage and seeing the change in the outlook, and how thankful they are for our continued commitment for taking care of them was particularly memorable,’’ he said.
Deleyiannis, who helps people who have been deformed by bullets, grizzly bears and cancer, said he cherishes the time he spends helping the children who have no access to reconstructive plastic surgeons.
“I think of it as kind of a responsibility to provide services to people who don’t have care. I have the training to provide a service that can help a lot of people. We return each year so we can provide critical care, as well as see new patients,’’ he said.
