LASIK and Vision Correction

What is LASIK?

LASIK (which stands for "laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis") is a popular type of eye surgery used to correct vision by changing how the eye focuses.

This outpatient surgical procedure uses an excimer (ultraviolet) laser to precisely reshape the cornea so that light rays are focused clearly on the retina.

LASIK is used to permanently correct nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), and astigmatism, reducing or eliminating the need for corrective lenses.

Is LASIK right for me?

Every eye is different and not everyone is a candidate for LASIK. About one out of every four people is a good LASIK candidate. Factors such as the shape of the eye and the thickness of the cornea affect which type of surgery is most suitable.

Evaluating your vision needs

At University of Colorado Health you’ll undergo a complete screening to determine whether or not you are a candidate for LASIK or other vision correction surgery.

This eye exam includes assessing the stability of your condition, examining the cornea and retina, taking corneal measurements, and testing for glaucoma. The doctor will also thoroughly review your medical history with you to make sure you have no other risk factors.

Why choose UCHealth for LASIK?

It’s important to choose a doctor who will accurately and thoroughly evaluate your eyes and give you an honest assessment of the best and safest treatment for your needs. At UCHealth we also use a team approach and double case review (two doctors reviewing your medical information) to make sure you receive tailored treatment that’s exactly right for your eyes.

The highly trained eye surgeons at UCHealth are among the most renowned and experienced LASIK surgeons in the region.
